Summer Blockbusters 2010 – July Releases

The Last Airbender
Cast: Noah Ringer, Nicola Peltz, Dev Patel and Jackson Rathbone
Expected Release Date: July 2nd, 2010
Plot: Directed by M. Night Shyamalan, this film is adapted from the animated series Avatar: The Last Airbender. The first of a planned trilogy, it revolves around a 12-year-old boy capable of controlling the four elements. Along with a few friends, he must save his planet from the ruthless Firebenders and restore balance to the nations of Air, Earth, Water and Fire. Hopefully, we won’t find out that the kid’s actually a ghost.

Predators
Cast: Unknown at this time. Robert Rodriguez will produce.
Expected Release Date: July 7th, 2010
Plot: A direct sequel to the original Predator film, this one will concern a group of Earth soldiers stranded on the Predator homeworld and fighting for their lives.

Despicable Me
Cast: (voices) Steve Carell, Miranda Cosgrove, Dana Gaier and Elsie Fisher
Expected Release Date: July 9th, 2010
Plot: A computer animated film with Steve Carell providing the voice of a supervillain who wants to steal the moon. His plans may be disrupted, however, by three orphan girls who look at him as potential father material.

Inception
Cast: Leonardo DiCaprio, Ken Watanabe, Joseph Gordon-Levitt, Cillian Murphy, Marion Cotillard, Ellen Page and Michael Caine
Expected Release Date: July 16th, 2010
Plot: It’s reported to be a “contemporary sci-fi actioner set within the architecture of the mind.” The budget is reported at $200 million, so I hope they get a bit more specific in the coming months. I also hope they get a better marketing campaign, as the first Inception trailer sucked.

Little Fockers
Cast: Ben Stiller, Robert De Niro, Owen Wilson, Teri Polo
Expected Release Date: July 30th, 2010
Plot: The cast of the previous two Focker movies return, this time comically dealing with themes such as divorce and death. Sounds pretty bleak, but I’m certain Stiller and company will find a way to make it work. After all, we’re talking about the guy who made runway modeling seem humorous.

Producer:
This is someone who finds financing for and supervises the day to day decision making in regards to budget, equipment, location, etc of a play, film, or TV project.

Principal:
This is a major character in a particular project. They are at a higher pay scale than a day player and the part tends to be larger.

Call Time - Comp Card - Acting and Modelling Term Glossary

Call Time:
This is the time you are required to be on set. DO NOT BE LATE or it may be your last call time for that production.

Comp Card:
Also known as Composite Card, this is used for commercial print and modeling. It is a model or actors postcard with 3-5 photos of the actor or model printed with their stats. These cards are used to market and submit to prospective clients, for auditions and casting calls. All cards display a headshot and smaller shots that show your versatility and talent.

Breakdowns - Acting and Modelling Term Glossary

Breakdowns:
When there is a project/photo shoot that needs to be cast, a producer, director or client hires a casting director or art director. That director puts out a breakdown which is a character description of all the roles being cast in that particular project. Agents receive these breakdowns and then submit their actors/models on projects. There are some breakdowns that are open to all, and actors/models can submit themselves if they match the type of the character being sought.

You got the job! When an actor/model accepts a booking, it is a legally binding verbal commitment that the actor/model will show up and perform. Most contracts for commercials, print, voice-overs are not signed until the job is complete, so when you say yes to a booking it is a firm commitment.

Modeling Photo Shoot Advice: Headshots

Headshots are the calling cards for actors and artists. They are the first impression an agent or the general public might form, and unless you are naturally photogenic, headshots require a bit of preparation. Read on to learn about how to choose what to wear for headshots, you want a photo that will be striking and stand out from the others in a good way.

Wear a top that is a solid color. Prints and patterns do not photograph nearly as well, and may take away from the focal point of the headshot--your face. You can stick to either a basic white or black if your headshot will be in black and white, rather than color, but make sure whatever you wear doesn't blend into the background too much. If your headshot will be in color, you should choose a color that compliments your skin tone and wear a top with a very simple style.

Decide what type of neckline accentuates your features. If you want to elongate your neck, wear a v-neck. To show off your collarbones, wear a scoop-necked shirt. If you are large chested, make sure you wear a higher neckline.

Bring several choices of tops with you to the photo shoot. This will give you options. Sometimes, what looks good in person does not look as good on film and vice versa. Therefore, you will want to have options and be able to change your look.

Keep your hair and hands out of your face. You want the employer or casting director to be able to see your face very well, and you don't want any part of it to be hidden.

Resist the urge to wear accessories. In terms of headshots, less is more. You want your headshot to be simple, elegant, and representative of you.

Audition Preparation Guide: The"DO's" List

Finally, the time has come… Your first audition!! This can be quite overwhelming so MAX Agency has put together a quick list of what to do to help you during your audition:

• Bring extra copies of required materials.(Ex: headshots, resumes)

• Wear something that you look nice in but that you are comfortable moving in.

• Get your hair out of your face

• Introduce yourself with a slate that includes your name, the name of your agency and the specific role that you are auditioning for.

• Look the auditors in the eye when you are slating (or directly into the camera).

• Look at a focal point on the wall above them when you are acting.

• Thank your auditors.

• Most of all BE CONFIDENT!! IT SHOWS!!

Significance of Modeling Agencies

You always see models – on tv, in magazines, on the internet, in movies, commercials, ads, etc; but behind every great model is an agency. Top models out there are backed up with great modeling agencies. This is when you’re likely to think that if you ever come to sign with any highly regarded modeling agency your career would be set as you might have always dreamed of. But have you ever tried to figure out what modeling agencies actually are , how they work, or make money? Modeling agencies work differently from one another, with different fees, commission structures, and management techniques - though they all follow similar best practices.

Modeling agencies perform as small independent business and a lot is determined by the market wherein they run and the agency’s personal and the owner(s). One of the most common problems that often seem to bother individuals in the world of modeling is the fact that there are still a number of scam and rip-off agencies in the industry. As most new models don’t have much knowledge about the operation of a modeling business, they often turn out to become easy prey for scam artists and cons.

The #1 purpose of a modeling agency is to find better work for their models, and in turn for themselves. Their responsibility is to perform as an agent or representative. As an agent they search around and negotiate the employment contracts for the talent or model. Normally, they charge models with a certain fee or a specific percent of what a model earns throughout his/her modeling. This percentage often ranges from 10 percent to 33 percent. The rules and regulations regarding a modeling agency vary in several states, and across North America. In some states, it’s possible for anyone in the country to get started with a modeling agency business without having to meet any legal formality but there are also certain states where it’s illegal to start modeling agencies without having a license for the purpose.

When looking for your agency, find signs of business best practices, like those promoted by the Better Business Bureau of North America, or other organizations as implications of their validity in the industry.
